Events in the Old Testament
These are the events that happened to the Jewish people, as described in the Old Testament, with a map below showing where these events took place. Each number on the map shows where the statement with that number took place.

1. Abraham leaves in the city of Ur, in Babylon, around 2000 BC.

2. Abraham lives at Haran, in the region now called Syria.

3. Abraham goes to a land called Canaan, the land God told him to go to.

4. Abraham's great-grandson goes to Egypt. Later the entire family moves there, and the Jews live in Egypt for about 400 years.

5. Moses leads the Jews out of Egypt. They live in a wilderness called Sinai for 40 years.

6. The next leader, Joshua, leads the Jews from the wilderness back into Canaan. Later, around 1000 BC, the Jews take control of most of the land of Canaan, and rename it Israel. Around 930 BC, the Jews divide into two kingdoms. The northern kingdom, called Israel, was conquered by the Assyrian empire in 722 BC. The southern kingdom, called Judah, was conquered by the Babylonian Empire in 586 BC.

7. Most of the Jews in Judea were taken to Babylon, where they lived for the next 70 years.

8. The Persian Empire defeats the Babylonian Empire, and allows the Jews to return home. About 500 years later, during the first century AD, Jesus is born and the New Testament begins.
